Former Clovis resident Shawn Sawa, 49, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for his role in a years-long scheme that stole nearly $5 million worth of canola from international food processors, U.S. Attorney Eric Grant announced Monday.

According to court documents, Sawa and co-defendant Richard Best diverted around $4.8 million from 2015 to 2017 through Best’s transloading business, Richard Best Transfer Inc. (RBT) The company was responsible for moving commodities from rail to truck for delivery.

Prosecutors said Sawa, who was then Fresno-area manager for one of the victim processors, accepted kickbacks to boost shipments routed to RBT before joining the theft operation. The two sold stolen canola through an acquaintance in Texas, according to court records.

Funds were routed through accounts belonging to Sawa, Best and RBT, including an account opened in Sawa’s spouse’s name to conceal payments.

Investigators said Sawa and Best issued fake inventory reports to hide shortfalls and used the proceeds to purchase homes, vehicles, travel and other expenses. As scrutiny started to increase, Best gave Sawa an old cellphone to avoid company monitoring.

Best pleaded guilty on Oct. 14, and is scheduled for sentencing on March 2. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The final sentence will be determined by the court.
