The Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission (EOC) will begin a search for its new CEO following the official departure of former CEO Emilia Reyes.

Reyes, who had been placed on a leave of absence in November, served as CEO from 2020 until December 2024.

Michelle Tutunjian, the nonprofit’s chief operating officer, temporarily assumed duties as acting CEO.

The nonprofit — one of the biggest in Fresno —  announced Tuesday that former CEO Brian Angus will assume interim leadership duties during a search to fill the vacancy. Angus previously served as Fresno EOC CEO from 2010 to 2019.

“Fresno EOC has always been a vital resource and advocate for our community,” Angus said in a news release. “I am honored to return during this transition to help ensure the agency remains strong, focused, and committed to delivering impactful services.”

The Fresno EOC Board of Commissioners will spearhead the search as the nonprofit enters 2025 — its 60th year — with more than $3 million in debt. The board learned in December that the organization’s debt had risen by around $500,000 from November to December.

Fresno EOC has an annual operating budget of $134 million. The $3.2 million deficit accounts for less than 3% of its spending.

Fresnoland reported at the December board meeting that commissioners questioned whether the organization may have lost $5 million in 2023.

Reyes was the first woman to assume duties as CEO for the nonprofit when she assumed the role four years ago.
