Covered California marked record high enrollment ahead of its Jan. 31 open enrollment deadline with an event in Fresno last week.

Jessica Altman, executive director of Covered California, joined local health officials at the United Health Care Centers of the San Joaquin Valley administration building in Northwest Fresno on Jan. 30.

A record-breaking 1.9 million Californians enrolled in state’s subsidized health insurance marketplace for 2025. Health officials noted efforts to grow enrollment are especially important in the Fresno area, where health challenges such as asthma disproportionately affect the community.

This open enrollment period, 299,060 Californians signed up for 2025 coverage as of Jan. 26, a 13% increase over the same period last year.

Another 1.6 million Californians have renewed their health insurance plans, a 10% jump.

In the San Joaquin Valley, nearly 25,000 Californians signed up during the most recent open enrollment period.

“Uninsured Californians are taking advantage of the unprecedented financial help available to help pay for coverage in 2025, as we have seen robust sign-ups throughout the state and reached our all-time record sign-ups before the end of open enrollment,” Altman said.

Altman was joined at the event by Justin Preas, president and CEO, United Health Centers; Dr. Arlin Venturina, chief medical officer, United Health Centers; and Graciela Anaya, director of community health, Central California Asthma Collaborative.
