Another Fulton Street restaurant is closing with the news Friday that Casa de Tamales has shuttered its downtown location.
While the company is still operating a restaurant in the Tower District, a Facebook post announced that its Fulton Street location is preventing the company from expanding in other areas.
“We’re proud of Downtown Fulton’s redevelopment,” said the post. “Unfortunately, its fruition isn’t coming along soon enough for us, and is preventing our expansion in other areas. By stepping back from our Fulton store, we’ll be able to regroup and focus more on adding to our Tower District location and resuming our retail project which we’re still planning on locating Downtown,” Liz Sanchez, owner and president of Casa de Tamales, said in her post on Facebook.
The restaurant, which focuses on a broad variety of tamales, ranging from classic recipes to fusion cuisine, is run by Sanchez, who credits her grandmother for her passion in making the Latin staple food.
The restaurant opened the Fulton Street location in 2016 with the hopes of joining in on the downtown revitalization, but Sanchez had to close up shop temporarily while construction was ongoing.
The announcement comes on the heels of another Fulton Street mainstay — Parsley Garden Café — closing up shop by the end of the month.
Sanchez was not immediately available for comment.
