Pizza 64 hosted its grand opening last week, debuting the first United States storefront for the Canadian-based pizza company — right here in Fresno.
First opened nearly a decade ago in Surrey, a suburb of Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada, the pizza company seeks to showcase new flavors and culturally unique pizzas, creating a fusion of Mexican, Indian and other flavors.
It opened on 64th Street in Surrey — hence the name.
Pizza 64 is located at The Crossroads at Shepherd Ranch at Sommerville Drive and Perrin Avenue in northeast Fresno. The address is 9525 N. Somerville Dr., Suite 111.
Owner and partner Gurwinder Singh said the Fresno area was the perfect opportunity for the company to expand out of Canada. With more than 30 locations in Canada, Fresno’s store marks the first Pizza 64 in the U.S., a trend that Singh hopes to see continue over the coming years.
“The reason why we chose Fresno is because this is a perfect location — a perfect mix of Latino, Indian and other cultures,” Singh said. “That’s the reason we wanted to come to Fresno first and then hopefully expand throughout California.”
The store also has plans to open stores in Oakland and Pleasanton, but does not have dates selected for the opening of those locations.
Singh said expansion to Fresno has been in the works for nearly a year, adding that finding the right ingredient suppliers was one of the biggest challenges for the company.
“Ingredients we use are completely different from what they have in the U.S. market,” Singh said, adding that the search, while challenging, was essential to achieve the quality they were seeking. “You have to make sure that you nail everything to the same level or same quality.”
Fresno’s Pizza 64 location is a take-out only location. They aim to keep wait times to less than 20 minutes and also offer online orders from their website pizza64menu.com. They also offer delivery.
Pizza 64 hopes to open a second Fresno location soon, targeting the west side of town. Applications for a second location have been submitted but yet to be finalized.
