Ben Hensley
Written by Gabriel Dillard
You’ve probably read his words in The Business Journal, and now it’s time to hear him call the next 10 games for the Fresno Grizzlies broadcast, beginning today.
Reporter Ben Hensley — whose areas of coverage include health care, retail, tourism and nonprofits — has a night job as an official scorer and field time coordinator with the Fresno Grizzlies. Last season, he began appearing on the Grizzlies broadcast and was a fill-in for the Visalia Rawhide.
Tonight’s broadcast starting at 6:20 p.m. will be his official Fresno Grizzlies fill-in debut as the team takes on the Rawhide in Visalia for a six-game stand through Sunday.
The Grizzlies return home the next day, Monday, Sept. 2, for the Labor Day start of the season closer against the San Jose Giants at Chukchansi Park. The ballpark is dark on Tuesday, Aug. 27, with Ben doing the next two games on Wednesday and Thursday.
Ben is a Monache High graduate from Porterville, where he played tuba in their 180-person marching band and later with the Bulldog Marching Band at Fresno State. He developed nerves of steel for nine years as a local student driving instructor, and honed his journalism skills on staff at the Fresno City College Rampage. He’s reported for The Business Journal for 2 ½ years, this year winning his first Gruner Award for Central Valley journalism, named for the late George Gruner. He also won a first-place award for writing in the statewide California Journalism Awards.
