Of all the laws that have come out of Sacramento, it’s safe to say that AB 5 has generated the most confusion from business owners.

Taking effect on Jan. 1, 2020, AB 5 is the independent contractor law that will essentially end the ability for small business owners to hire most people on a contract basis.

The California Chamber of Commerce has you covered, making available both a free white paper and a podcast with its experts giving an overview of what employers should know about the new law.

The free white paper, “A Roadmap for AB 5: California’s New Law on Worker Classification,” can be downloaded here. The podcast, episode 38 of the Chamber’s “The Workplace” series, can be found here (it is premium content for CalChamber members).

If you use contractors in any way, shape or form, this is truly required reading — unless you enjoy being sued.
