In times of global uncertainty, it is often the small, everyday gestures that remind service members they are not forgotten. As conflicts continue around the world and many military families face deployments and long separations, communities here at home look for meaningful ways to show their appreciation and support.

One opportunity that many people may not realize exists comes through the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

While most people know the program as a way to support local Girl Scouts, it also provides a simple way for community members to send a small piece of home to those serving our country. Through cookie donation programs, customers can choose to purchase boxes that are distributed to deployed service members, veterans’ organizations, and local nonprofits that support military families.

For someone stationed thousands of miles away, something as familiar as a box of cookies can serve as a reminder that people back home are thinking of them. It’s a small gesture, but one that carries real meaning.

These donations often reach military units overseas as well as organizations here at home that serve veterans and active-duty families. In many cases, the cookies are shared among units or distributed through support groups and community programs.

At the same time, the experience of running the cookie program gives young people the chance to learn skills that extend far beyond selling a product. Girls set goals, learn to communicate with customers, manage money and understand the importance of community involvement. It’s often one of the first opportunities they have to see how their efforts can make a positive difference for others.

For those looking for a way to express gratitude to members of the military, participating in a cookie donation program is one simple option. At a time when the world can feel complicated, small acts of generosity still have the power to connect communities, from the girls learning leadership skills here at home to the service members serving far from it.

Community members can support these efforts by visiting a local Girl Scout cookie booth or ordering online through a registered Girl Scout in their area, where they can also choose to donate cookies to military members and local nonprofit partners.
