The Central Valley Community Foundation is promoting the upcoming release of “Motel Drive,” a documentary following the life of a local family through their journey of resilience, overcoming adversity and the vital role of place-based community benefit organizations in their lives.
The documentary is an unfiltered and compelling portrayal of a family grappling with the harsh realities of living in one of Fresno’s most challenging neighborhoods — Motel Drive near Belmont Avenue and Highway 99. Over the course of seven years, the documentary follows a family as it navigates the complexities of mental health issues and drug addiction, while raising a son in an environment with obstacles at every turn.
A focal point of the documentary is the son’s journey from growing up on Motel Drive to graduating valedictorian from J.E. Young Academic Center. His story serves as a testament to the strength of the human spirit, demonstrating that even in the most adverse circumstances, an individual can rise above and achieve greatness, according to the foundation news release.
“Motel Drive” shows the critical role that place-based community benefit organizations play in supporting families in underserved communities, such as Fresno DRIVE Hub “Live Again Fresno.” Highlighted in the documentary, Live Again Fresno offers assistance, resources and guidance to families like the one featured in the film. The documentary showcases how these organizations become pillars of hope, providing essential services, guidance and a sense of community to those in need.
The sold-out screening will take place on Thursday, Oct. 26 at the Tower Theatre at 6 p.m. Due to high demand, a second showing was added at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are free but must be reserved online.
