A Northern California-based bank with three Central Valley branches last week reported a data breach stemming from a February incident that may have impacted customers’ private information.

Chico-based Tri Counties Bank previously reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that on Feb. 7 it became aware of suspicious activity on its computer network and subsequently shut down its networked systems. One customer, owner of a landscape and maintenance business in Chico, said she racked up almost $650 in late fees as a result of the shutdown, reported Chico’s Action News Now.

Tri Counties Bank recently wrapped up a data review, finding that while account balances, transactions, mobile and online banking user IDs and passwords were not affected by the malware attack, information that could have been impacted includes names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account information, health insurance information, mother’s maiden name and more.

The bank alerted federal law enforcement and is cooperating with its investigation. It is also offering 24 months of credit monitoring services at no cost.

While it found no evidence of identity theft or fraud in connection with the incident, “Tri Counties Bank is notifying those affected out of an abundance of caution,” according to a letter to customers.

“The Company has incurred, and may continue to incur, certain expenses related to this incident. Further, the Company remains subject to risks and uncertainties as a result of the incident, including as a result of potential litigation, changes in customer behavior, and/or additional regulatory scrutiny. While the Company maintains insurance to cover losses related to cybersecurity risks and business interruption, such policies may not be sufficient to cover all losses of this incident or any future incidents,” according to an Oct. 13 Tri Counties Bank Form 8-K filing with the SEC.

Tri Counties Bank has 68 offices throughout the state, including locations in Fresno, Visalia and Chowchilla. It has Central Valley deposits of $258.42 million, according to SEC deposit market share data.
