The Fourth of July is upon us, and with the holiday falling on a Tuesday this year, everything from employee timetables to government offices will be subject to varying schedules.
All government offices will be closed on Tuesday. This includes the Fresno Council of Governments, City Hall and all related government offices, including state and federal offices. Post offices and mail delivery will also be shuttered on Tuesday.
Schools and educational institutions will also largely be closed. Campus offices at Fresno State will be closed for the holiday. The Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market will operate under limited hours from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Other institutions, including Fresno City College and Fresno Pacific University, will be closed. K-12 school districts in the area will also be closed.
Update 7/3:
The City of Fresno has provided an updated list of offices and departments that will be closed for the holiday.
Airports: Administrative offices will be closed. All other services will operate normally.
Fire/Police Departments: Administrative offices will be closed. Other departments will continue operation.
Parking division: Parking meters and City parking facilities will not be enforced and all offices receiving payment will be closed.
Parks and Recreation (PARCS): All administrative offices will be closed. Staffed skate parks will operate from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Woodward and Roeding parks will operate from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. Parking fees are $7. Community parks will remain open 7 a.m. to dusk. Community centers will be closed for the holiday.
Department of Public Utilities: Administrative offices will be closed. Residential waste collection will operate normally.
Utility Payments/Business Tax: Offices will be closed for the holiday. Online and phone utility payments can still be made.
For urgent issues, residents are encouraged to call 3-1-1 or use the FresGo mobile app.
Events to Attend
Kerman Festival of American Spirit Fireworks Extravaganza – July 3
On Monday, Kerman will host its fireworks celebration: Festival of American Spirit at Kerman High School, located at 205 S. First St. in Kerman.
Gates open at 6 p.m. with food trucks, vendors, water slides, bounce houses and live entertainment including a dance performance from local Studio 22 at 6 p.m., a karate demonstration at 6:30 p.m. and a presentation of colors and veterans tribute presentation scheduled at 9 p.m. prior to the fireworks show.
Tickets for the event can be purchased online with pre-sale tickets available at a discount in local grocery stores. Online and gate tickets will be available at $6 for adults, $3 for children, with a $1 discount on pre-sale grocery store tickets.
Two fun zones will be available — a soft-play area for children up to 5-years-old and two waterslides for kids 5 and up. Wristbands for unlimited waterslides and the soft-play zone are $5.
Granite Park Independence Day Celebration Fireworks Show – July 3
Granite Park, located at 3950 N. Cedar Ave. in Fresno, will also host its Independence Day Celebration on July 3 starting at 6 p.m.
The event will feature food, drinks, vendors, baseball and a DJ providing fun and entertainment for guests in attendance to the free event.
Granite Park’s celebration is sponsored by Club One Casino.
Selma’s Community Independence Day Celebration and Fireworks – July 3
Also on Monday, Selma will host its 33rd Community Independence Day Celebration at the Selma High School Stadium from 5:30 to 9 p.m.
Tickets to the event are $5, with kids aged 5 to 12 getting in for $2. Children 4 and under and veterans (with ID) can get in for free.
Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to the event. Ice chests and outside food/drinks are not allowed.
Selma’s event is sponsored by Caglia Environmental.
Kingsburg Independence Day Celebration – July 3
On July 3, Kingsburg will host its Independence Day Celebration at the Kingsburg High School Stadium from 6-9:30 p.m.
Several food vendors will be in attendance at the event, with fireworks scheduled to begin shortly after 9 p.m.
Tickets to the event are $5 with parking available for an additional $5 fee.
City of Fresno Fireworks Show – July 4
The City of Fresno will host its first of two fireworks shows on the Fourth of July from 6-9 p.m. at McLane High School, located at 2727 N. Cedar Ave. in Fresno.
Food trucks and community resources will be featured, followed by a fireworks display.
Attendance to the event is free, however, seating is limited. Guests are encouraged to show up early and will be admitted on a first come, first serve basis.
Fresno Grizzlies Fireworks Extravaganza – July 4
Also on July 4, the Fresno Grizzlies will present a fireworks show after their matchup against the San Jose Giants.
Tickets are still available for the Grizzlies’ game against the Giants, but are not required to view the fireworks show. Gates for those attending only the fireworks show will open after the completion of the 7th inning.
Gates to the ballgame will open at 5:05 p.m., with first pitch scheduled at 6:35 p.m.
Tickets for the game are still available, but are selling fast. Last year’s July 4 matchup drew more than 11,000 fans.
Clovis Freedom Fest – July 4
Clovis will host its annual Freedom Fest on July 4 at Clovis High School’s Lamonica Stadium.
Gates open at 5 p.m. for the event with food and entertainment available prior to the start of the fireworks show at 9 p.m.
Freedom Fest showcases one of the largest pyrotechnic displays on the West Coast, according to visitclovis.com.
Tickets to the event are $5.
Sanger 4th of July Spectacular – July 4
The City of Sanger will host its 4th of July Spectacular on July 4 at 5:30 p.m. at the Sanger High School Practice Field, located at 1045 N. Bethel Ave in Sanger.
The celebration will feature music, food vendors, fireworks and other family fun entertainment.
Tickets to the event are $3, and are also available in a pack of four, which includes a parking pass and can be purchased for $15.
Excessive Heat Warnings
The Central Valley will also experience its first major heat wave of the summer, with temperatures expected to soar well over 100 degrees.
In light of the high temperatures, South Central California has issued an excessive heat warning as of Friday afternoon.
The Fresno County Department of Public Health provided some recommendations on how to remain safe in high-heat conditions.
