The City of Fresno will be receiving millions from the state from the Clean CA Grant program.

Fresno will be awarded $5 million from the grant program administered by the California Department of Transportation, which is designed to remove litter, create jobs, promote public engagement and education, and transform unsightly roadsides.

The $5 million grant will be invested in five of the most disadvantaged census tracts in Central Fresno.

The Fresno City Council approved the city’s application for the Clean CA Grant program at the end of January 2022, with a notification of approval coming a month later.

“It’s no secret that this project area that overlaps both District 3 and 7, has faced its fair share of challenges,” said Council President Nelson Esparza. “Thanks to the hard work of the City’s Public Works and PARCS Departments, we now have an extra $5 million dollars to be able to perform vital infrastructure and non-infrastructure improvements.”

Projects that will be funded from this program include the complete reconstruction of the median island along Belmont Avenue, the planting of 95 new trees along the same street, amenity and lighting improvements at eight bus stops and a clean up crew for major traffic corridors including the avenues of Belmont, Olive and Blackstone and Abby Street.

The funds will be used to host four “Beautify Fresno” events and establish three “Beautify Fresno” Clubs at local elementary schools.

Funds will also be used by the city to commission eight murals in pre-designated sites to be painted by local artists.

“This $5 million is a game changer in these neighborhoods. It is transformation and will go a long way in restoring pride in our community,” said Mayor Jerry Dyer.
