Central Valley counties saw a slight bump in unemployment for June as farms sent workers home, according to the latest data from the state Employment Development Department.

The unemployment rate for Fresno County was 7.6 percent in June, up from 6.8 percent in May and below 8.1 percent a year ago.

On a month over basis, manufacturing moved up by 600 jobs and construction by 400 jobs. Farms saw the largest drop with 700 jobs.

Year over year, government saw the largest increase with 2,600 jobs. The largest drop was in leisure & hospitality with 800 jobs.

In Kings County, the rate was 8.2 percent, up from 6.9 percent in May and down from 8.7 percent a year ago.

Farms shed 600 jobs month-over-month, and nonfarm industries shed 100.

On an annual basis, farms added 500 jobs while nonfarm industries added 200.

Madera County’s unemployment rate was 7.4 percent, up from 6.5 percent in May but below 7.9 percent a year ago.

Farms shed 500 jobs and nonfarm industries lost 200 jobs on a monthly basis. Annually, farms shed 100 jobs but nonfarm industries added 900.

Tulare County’s unemployment rate for June was 9.6 percent, up from 8.5 percent in May but barely below 9.7 percent a year ago.

Tulare County farms lost 1,200 jobs during the month, while the nonfarm sector added 200. On a yearly basis, nonfarm industries added 3,600 new jobs, and farms added 200.

California’s unemployment rate held at 4.2 percent for the third consecutive month — a record low dating back to 1976.
