Unemployment rates in the Central Valley rose slightly in November due to a seasonal wane of harvest activity, though the retail sector saw its own seasonal boost, according to new datat from the state Employment Development Department.

 

Fresno County’s jobless rate for November was 9.3 percent, up from 9.1 percent in October and below 10 percent a year ago.

A seasonal boost from the retail sector added 1,900 jobs month over month, which was tempered by a seasonal loss of 5,100 jobs in farm employment for a net loss of 3,300 jobs.

Year over year, total industry jobless was up 6,000 jobs, lead by government with 3,000 more jobs added in 2016.

Kings County’s unemployment rate was also 9.3 percent last month, up from 9 percent in October and below 10.4 percent a year ago.

Farm employment month over month fell by 500 jobs, bolstered by an additional 200 jobs in the retail sector for a net loss of 300 jobs.

Year over year, nonfarm jobless remained static while Kings County farms added 700 positions.

In November Madera County’s unemployment rate was 9 percent, up from 8.4 percent in October and below 10.4 percent last year

Month over month farms shed 1,300 jobs while nonfarm sectors lost 400 positions. Year over year, farms lost 100 jobs while nonfarm sectors added 1,600 jobs.

In Tulare County, the November unemployment rate was 10.8 percent, unchanged from October and below 11.3 percent a year ago.

Tulare County farms lost 3,200 jobs month over month, while nonfarm sectors gained 500 jobs. Year over year, farms added 200 jobs while nonfarm industries gained 2,200 jobs.

California’s November jobless rate fell to 5.3 percent from 5.5 percent in October.
