The West Mediterranean Exporters’ Association, also known as BAIB, will be making a stop in Fresno this month as part of a tour to develop business ties with California.

The Turkey-based food cluster’s mission is to establish connections and create trade opportunities during the visit that will run through Jan. 17.

The group, which is originating from Antalya, major tourism and ag center in southwest Turkey, consists of 25 individuals representing 14 companies.

“We want to research California’s business environment and learn about agricultural production, sales and distribution,” said Hakkı Bahar, BAIB’s chairman. “We hope this trip will generate exciting opportunities for business.”

On Jan. 15, the delegation will head to Fresno to meet with the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, the Fresno County Economic Development Corp. and the Fresno County Farm Bureau, according to a news release. The day will include an industry reception. The main interests of BAIB include heavily grown crops in the Valley like figs and grapes, along with dairy.

“In the first 11 months of 2018, Turkey exported more than $2 billion of fresh fruits,” Bahar said. “Turkish exporters are agile business people who adapt easily to local market conditions and compliance requirements.”

The program is coordinated by the Ministry of Trade of Turkey and organized by BAIB, using the services Trelodex, an Irvine-based consulting firm.

Stops in Los Angeles and San Francisco are also on the agenda.
