Fresno is experiencing a severe shortage of physicians, but doctors may have financial incentive for coming in and filling that need.

According to the 2018 U.S. Physician Employment Report, which was released on Wednesday by the clinician networking service Doximity, Fresno and New Orleans are the leading cities in America in pay growth for physicians – both resting at 15 percent.

Measurement of compensation growth for the report was drawn from Doximity’s self-reported compensation surveys of approximately 70,000 fulltime licensed U.S. physicians and 7,500 nurses who practiced at least 40 hours per week between 2017 and 2018.

“The 2018 Doximity data indicates significant growth in demand for physicians,” said Christopher Whatley, an adjunct assistant professor at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, and the lead author of the report. “Other research has shown that there are numerous factors driving physician demand, including an aging population that requires more medical services and increased administrative tasks for doctors.”

The report, however, did caution that there was not always a correlation between demand and pay increases, and other factors beyond their study’s parameters had an impact on the growth of compensation packages.
