U.S. airports need more than $100 billion in renovations and infrastructure improvements.

This from a study of 100 airports that included Fresno Yosemite International Airport, but the report released earlier this month doesn’t list the needs and costs of any of the airports.

The study by the Airports Council International – North America looked at the infrastructure needs of airports from this year through 2021 to accommodate growth in passenger numbers and cargo activity, as well as rehabilitating existing buildings and tarmacs and installing new technology.

“At airports across the United States, terminal projects represent 54.1 percent of overall airport infrastructure needs.  Landside projects, including parking and road way circulation, represent 24.8 percent of total needs and airside projects, such as runways, and taxiways, represent 21.1 percent of total needs,” the agency reports.

Small-hub airports, which include the Fresno Yosemite airport, handle 8.4 percent of all enplanements in the nation and account for $8.5 billion of total airport infrastructure needs.

“Fresno Yosemite International Airport will undertake several infrastructure improvement projects over the next 10 years to accommodate growth and provide a bridge to the future,” local airport officials stated in a press release.

Expansion projects are planned for terminal and gate areas, parking areas, roadways, commercial aircraft ramp areas and airfield improvements.

Those projects will be paid for with Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Grants, and revenue bonds backed by (the airport’s) Passenger Facility Charge program and airport operating revenues, the press release said.
