Members of the State Center Community College District (SCCCD) broke ground on a new project at Madera Community College Center, the first one to be built with Measure C funding.

Among those speaking at the Tuesday afternoon event were SCCCD Chancellor Paul Parnell, Rep. Jim Costa (D-Fresno), Assemblyman Frank Bigelow (R-O’Neals) and Bobby Kahn, SCCCD Board president.

“It’s always touching when people reach out and touch you with their dollars that they genuinely give,” Kahn said.

Passed in 2016, Measure C is a $485-million bond for SCCCD to update, improve and construct upon the District. Measuring 12,628 square feet, the Center for Agriculture and Technology will cost $5 million and marks the beginning of a series of major construction projects.

“We have the honor of breaking ground here, but you’re going to see projects in west Fresno, you’re going to see projects on all of our campuses… you’re going to see a new campus up in Oakhurst,” Kahn said. “There’s just going to be an array of projects that are going to be going on in the next couple of years.”

Currently, there are more than 5,000 students at Madera Community College Center. There are also plans to turn it into a full college in 2020.
