The Fresno County Panning Commission will consider on Thursday whether a proposal by the Sanger Unified School District to build a kindergarten-12th-grade school conforms to the county’s General Plan.

The 50,000-acre orchard where the district is interested in building is in an unincorporated part of the county, south of Clovis, off the west side of North McCall Avenue at the East Gettysburg Avenue alignment.

Before purchasing the land, the Planning Commission first has to sign off that building the large school would fit in with the General Plan. If that approval comes, then some time in the future the parcel would need to be rezoned from its current agricultural status for school construction to go forward.

“The district has stated that the new site is necessary to serve the planned student population growth generated by urban development,” states the agenda report on the matter.

“Planned grade levels and enrollment would typically serve approximately 700 students in kindergarten through eighth grade and 250 students in grades nine through 12. This campus would have 50 to 70 employees [including administrators, faculty, and support staff], and would include administrative offices, classrooms, a multi-purpose building, sport fields, physical education facilities and parking areas.”

As for the location, the report states, “This area of the county is experiencing urbanization and has been planned for future mixed-use business center and high-density residential development by the city of Clovis.”

It goes on to estimate construction time at 5-7 if all the approvals are cleared, and that timing would coincide with new, planned residential development in the area.
