At least one local GEICO agent is apparently affected by the insurance company’s closure of offices in California.

First reported by the Sacramento Bee, GEICO has closed all 38 agent offices in the Golden State — and has also ended the practice of selling policies through telephone agents in the state.

The move results in the laying off of hundreds, the Bee reported, including at three Fresno offices.

A search of an archived version of the GEICO website from June 2021 reveals an office in the Fresno area at 1122 E. Champlain Dr., Suite 103. A report from commercial real estate brokerage Retail California shows a lease was signed by GEICO for that location around April 2021.

Efforts to reach the agent, Alejandra Rodriquez, were unsuccessful Tuesday.

The California Department of Insurance is monitoring the situation to ensure consumers are protected, reported the Bee.

A GEICO spokesperson told the Bee it was not leaving California.

“We continue to write policies in California, and we remain available through our direct channels for the more than 2.18 million California customers presently insured with us,” the company said in an unsigned emailed statement to The Sacramento Bee.
