A handful of Central Valley towns has made a list of U.S. cities with the highest rates of identity theft, according to a new report.

Credit rewards program Upgraded Points compiled the list using data from the Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Census Bureau.

The Fresno metro area saw a three-year increase of 16.5% in identity theft reports from 2019-2022, though it saw a 4.4% decrease in theft reports from 2021-2022. Fresno saw 28.7 identity theft reports per 10,000 residents last year, compared to the U.S. as a whole with 33.4 reports.

Fresno ranked No. 74 on the list of 357 U.S. metros with the highest rates of identity theft. No. 1 was Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with 106.1 identity theft reports per 10,000 residents. La Crosse, Wisconsin, was at the bottom of the list with 7.4 reporters per 10,000 residents.

Visalia was No. 310 on the list with 11.7 identity theft reports per 10,000 residents, a three-year increase of 14.5% and one-year decrease of 10.4%.

Madera came in at No. 201 with 16.9 reports per 10,000 residents, a 35.7% increase in three years and a nearly 5% decrease in one year.

Hanford came in at No. 236 with 15.1 reporters per 10,000 residents, a 52.6% increase in three years and a 16.5% decrease in one year.
