A new report names Fresno one of the most diverse cities in the U.S.

According to analysis from U.S. News & World Report, Fresno ranks at No. 9 among the Most Racially Diverse Large Cities in America. Stockton is ranked No. 1, and out of the top 10, seven of the most diverse cities are in California.

Oakland takes the No. 2 spot, followed by Sacramento at No. 3.

The least racially diverse large city in America is El Paso, Texas.

In determining the most racially diverse cities in the country, U.S. News & World Report calculated a diversity score for each of the 66 U.S. cities with populations of 300,000 or more.

The diversity score represents the likeliness that, in a certain city, two people chosen at random will be from different racial and ethnic groups.

“It’s clear that cities in the U.S. are becoming less homogenous,” said Devon Haynie, assistant managing editor for cities at U.S. News & World Report. “But U.S. News’ in-depth analysis reveals that growth in diversity doesn’t always translate to equal opportunity. Even the most diverse cities in the country are facing racial inequalities in income levels, educational attainment and homeownership rates.”

One of the key findings of the report is that most cities are becoming more racially diverse, with about 70% of the 66 cities evaluated — 46 cities — growing in racial diversity from 2010 to 2018.

Despite that finding, Fresno actually grew less diverse in that period, with a reduction of 2.87%. The white population grew by 29.5% in that period, followed by the Asian population increasing by 20.8% and the Hispanic population growing by 13%.

The black population in Fresno decreased by 14.2% in those eight years, followed by American Indians with a loss of 7% and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders by 8.7%.

The Cities project is part of U.S. News’ Government Rankings Initiative that measures government performance at the international, state, and local levels and includes the Best Countries, Best States, Healthiest Communities, and Cities projects.
