Kristi Burkhart, executive director of the Fresno Pregnancy Care Center, was recently named the 2016 Woman of the Year by Assemblyman Jim Patterson (R-Fresno) for her health advocacy work in the Central Valley.

Burkhart was honored during a ceremony in Sacramento earlier this week.

“Kristi is a dedicated advocate for mothers facing unexpected pregnancies and a champion for babies who might not have had the chance at the lives they are living today,” Patterson said.

Burkhart first came to the Pregnancy Care Center as a volunteer in 2000. The group provides free pregnancy and childcare classes, ultrasounds, post-abortive counseling and community referrals for adoptions to parents in need.

According to a statement from Patterson’s office, Burkhart herself was adopted, and adopted two of her four children with her husband.

In 2015, the Fresno Pregnancy Care Center served more than 3,000 women and men, as well as 1,300 babies.
