A global beverage company is celebrating its local sustainability efforts.

POM Wonderful held a ribbon cutting Thursday for the completion of a solar farm at its Del Rey plant east of Fowler.

Construction for the solar farm began in November 2021, with the panels being installed in March and going operational in June. Once the solar farm is completed, it will provide the processing plant more than 90% of the company’s electricity needs by 2023.

The solar farm covers nearly 40 acres and consists of approximately 20,561 panels that will generate about 17.3 million kilowatt hours per year. About 35 workers were needed to construct the solar farm — mainly electricians.

“As an agriculture company at heart, we know that sustainability is critical to our future—that’s why we conserve natural resources and work hard to minimize our company’s impact on the environment,” said Derrick Miller, president of POM Wonderful.

POM Wonderful also announced the launch of its new 100% recycled plastic 16 oz bottles of POM Wonderful juices.

These initiatives are part of The Wonderful Company and owners Lynda and Stewart Resnick’s investment of more than $1.3 billion in environmental sustainability efforts to fight climate change.

“This is one step of many that we are taking to keep progressively taking steps in the right direction, whether with energy, packaging, water, power—we got a multifaceted roadmap that we are working with being that we are an ag company and we know that sustainability is critical to our future,” Miller said.
