Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) announced today the sale of its Tule River hydroelectric project to Tule Hydro LLC.

In 2018, PG&E requested offers for purchase proposals for the project located near Springville in Tulare County. Regulatory approvals were granted in 2022 following the purchase and sale agreement with Tule Hydro LLC in late 2021.

Escrow on the site closed Thursday.

The project, constructed in 1914, consists of 42 acres of land housing a 6.4-megawatt powerhouse, three water diversions, and water conveyance systems.

Several structures related to the penstock pipe were damaged during a 2017 wildfire. Since then the project has been non-operational.

PG&E said the project is no longer an economic option for generating electricity due to its distance from other PG&E hydroelectric facilities and its regional headquarters. This caused operating costs to exceed that which PG&E deemed economically sensible.

Employees of PG&E will not be affected by the sale.
