The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced it has reached a settlement over the improper storage of pesticides by a global company with facilities in Hanford and Huron.

Nutrien Ag Solutions will pay $331,353 in civil penalties as part of the enforcement action.

EPA officials said Nutrien Ag Solutions failed to protect pesticide containers from damage by moving equipment, failed to meet capacity requirements for secondary containment units to protect from spills from bulk containers and distributed and sold misbranded pesticides, among other violations.

Nutrien Ag Solutions is one of the largest providers of crop nutrients in the world. A facility in Arizona and seven facilities in California — including facilities in the Fresno County community of Huron and Hanford — are included under this enforcement action.

Inspections between 2013 and 2017 by federal and state officials found a total of 52 violations among the eight Nutrien facilities.

The enforcement covers violations under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

“Companies that produce or refill pesticide products are required to carefully follow FIFRA requirements to ensure the public and the environment are protected,” said EPA Pacific Southwest Enforcement Division Director Kathleen Johnson. “Improper storage of pesticides can lead to spills or leaks that may adversely affect human health and the environment.”

Nutrien has corrected all identified compliance issues, according to the EPA.
