Tony Mathis, who earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Fresno State, has been appointed as vice president and general manager of GE Aviation’s Military Systems Organization.

GOVERNMENT

Jose Flores, a retired Fresno State County Sheriff’s captain and Clovis City Council member, has been appointed the new police chief for the State Center Community College District police department.

EDUCATION

Dr. Christopher R. Meyer, a Central Valley native who currently is a program director in the Division of Biological Infrastructure at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Virginia, is the new dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at Fresno State. Meyer is a biochemist with extensive teaching, mentoring and leadership at Cal State Fullerton.


Board members of State Center Community College District (SCCCD) elected John Leal as board president at its December board meeting. Bobby Kahn was elected vice president and Eric Payne was elected secretary. The executive committee is joined by trustees Miguel Arias, Richard M. Caglia, Ronald H. Nishinaka, and newly elected Deborah J. Ikeda (former president of Clovis Community College).

NONPROFITS

Girl Scouts of Central California South has named three women to be honored at its 2017 Women Inspiring Girls Awards Luncheon: Author Armen Bacon; Soyla Griffin, CEO of Valley Health Team; and Sandy Stubblefield, counselor for Fresno State Survivors of Suicide Loss.

ENVIRONMENT

The Friant Water Authority has selected Douglas DeFlitch to serve as its first chief operating officer. He will be based in Lindsay, and will oversee operations and maintenance work, budgets and administration. He will assume his new position on Jan. 16, 2017. DeFlitch has spent the last 10 years as a hydrologist and manager for the federal Bureau of Reclamation.
