Fresno residents may not have to pay to try the newest sandwich in the area when Ike’s Love & Sandwiches celebrates its grand opening Friday.

Though the Bay Area-based sandwich chain opened Monday, it will make things official on Friday at its Campus Pointe location near Fresno State. As part of that event, the first 50 guests will receive a free sandwich.

Customers can pick from traditional favorites like the “Matt Cain,” named for a former San Francisco Giants pitcher, or the “Meatless Mike,” one of their 500 either vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free sandwich options.

Hungry guests can also try one of two Fresno-specific sandwiches. The “Charlotte Kensington” is made with halal chicken, buffalo Fresno sauce and American cheese. Their vegetarian choice special to Fresno is “What’s Popping?!” similar to the Charlotte Kensington, but replacing it with vegan chicken and provolone cheese.

Kensington refers to the character played by Carol Burnett in the “Fresno” miniseries, and “What’s Popping?!” refers to “popping” a street dance style that originated in Fresno in the 1970s, reported The Fresno Bee.

Ike’s opened its first location in Fresno in February at Palmdon Shopping Center at Palm and Herndon avenues.

The typical Ike’s location creates about 20 new jobs.

The location at 3071 E. Campus Pointe Dr. will be open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 10 pm.
