Meathead Movers, a San Luis Obispo-based moving company, announced it is raising its entry-level pay to $15 an hour for all movers and packers.

For the Fresno location, that raise will be in the paychecks of 70 of the total of 80 employees.

The $3-per-hour pay raise marks the largest increase in pay rate to its employees in the company’s 22-year history. Student athletes founded meathead Movers as a way to provide employment opportunities for student athletes.

“We know firsthand the struggles of making ends meet and the increased costs of living,” said Aaron Steed, CEO of Meathead Movers. “We started the company in high school because we needed to figure out a way to make money while keeping up with our athletic schedules. With that foundation, we are committed to making that a reality for our student athlete employees – increasing our pay was another step to ensuring that.”

Along with the company-wide pay raise, Meathead Movers aims to hire 200 employees across its five branches before it enters its busy season. The company expects that the pay increase and the potential for tips will spark interest from student athletes to work as movers and packers.

Currently, Meathead Movers handles more than 20,000 local moves per year with more than 700 employees, making it the largest independent moving company in the state.

“This is just the beginning of the ongoing updates that we’re implementing to ensure that Meathead Movers is the ultimate job for students and athletes,” Steed said. “We want to be the highest paying moving company in our service areas, because we expect the highest caliber of employees working for us.”
