A working mother will receive up to $50,000 in free dental surgery from a clinic in north Fresno.

The recipient is Erlinda Vargas, 33, a mother of three who works at the Child Development Center at Saint Agnes Medical Center. Her surgery is being given through Fresno Oral Maxillofacial Surgery & Dental Implant Center’s Second Chance Program, aimed at giving a patient a new smile.

“As you know, dental disease, dental loss, tooth loss can be very debilitating,” said Allen Chien, DDS. “It can be difficult to smile, it can be difficult to eat and certainly a loss of confidence and things like that.”

Vargas was selected from 400 applicants and was one of 40 people interviewed. She found out that she won on Wednesday morning. In a treatment that will take four to six months, she will have an implant fixture placed in her mouth by an oral surgeon.

“I’ve actually had a couple of surgeries in my life, so I think this will be a piece of cake and I’m not scared,” Vargas said. “So I’m just ready to get this started and start smiling again.”
