Unemployment rates fell across the Central Valley last month, boosted in part by job gains in the manufacturing industry, according to the latest data from the state Employment Development Department.

Fresno County’s unemployment rate for July was 7.2 percent, down from 7.6 percent in June and below 8.1 percent a year ago.

Manufacturing reported the largest month-over increase in Fresno County with 1,200 jobs. Government saw the largest drop of 7,800 due to the seasonal pattern of school letting out for the summer.

On an annual basis, total industry employment increased by a net 9,600 jobs, with farm employment falling by 300 jobs.

Kings County’s unemployment rate for July was 7.5 percent, down from 8.2 percent in June and below 8.3 percent a year ago.

Manufacturing led the monthly growth with the addition of 600 jobs. Government saw a dip of 600 positions.

On an annual basis, nonfarm employment was unchanged while farm industries added 500 jobs.

The unemployment rate in Madera county was 7 percent in July, down from 7.3 percent in June and below 8 percent last year.

Despite the unemployment rate drop, farm industries shed 600 jobs in the month and nonfarm industries lost 500 jobs.

On an annual basis, farms lost 300 jobs while nonfarm industries added 1,200 jobs.

Tulare County’s unemployment rate was 9.3 percent last month, down from 9.6 percent in June and below 10.3 percent a year ago.

On a monthly basis, farms lost 2,600 positions while nonfarm industries lost 2,900 jobs.

On an annual basis, farms added 4,500 jobs while nonfarm sectors added 3,100 jobs.

The statewide unemployment rate remained steady at 4.2 percent last month — holding a record low for the fourth consecutive month dating back to 1976.
