Larry Johanson, president and CEO of Johanson Transportation Services, celebrated his father’s 94th birthday by donating $2,000 each to five charities, which were selected by the Fresno company’s employees.

His father, Richard, is the founder and chairman of the board of the company, as well as a World War II veteran and author. He started the started company in 1971.

“I wanted to commemorate my father’s birthday by demonstrating the values he has taught us all about being mindful and appreciating our blessings,” Larry Johanson said. “I decided to surprise the staff with a birthday luncheon this week, by asking them to break into five groups and select five nonprofits they felt were important to support and pay it forward with these donations.”

Selected charities include: Breaking the Barriers, a group dedicated to accelerating awareness, understanding, acceptance and education for people with various abilities; Marjaree Mason Center, which is dedicated to fighting domestic abuse; Hinds Hospice; Martin Park Ministry House, a nonprofit which provides a safe space children and families in the Lowell neighborhood in Downtown Fresno and; Terry’s House, a home away from home for families of patients who are being care for extended periods of time at Community Regional Medical Center.

“You can not give away kindness,” Richard Johanson said. “It is always returned.”
