California State Treasurer John Chiang will make an appearance in Fresno Wednesday to promote the launch of CalSavers, the new state-run retirement plan for workers.

Chiang is scheduled to be joined by Ashley Swearengin, former Fresno mayor and president and CEO of the Central Valley Community Foundation, Dora Westerlund, CalSavers board member and Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation CEO and Lindsay Callahan, CEO of the United Way of Fresno and Madera Counties.

The event is at 1:15 p.m. at the United Way office at 4949 E. Kings Canyon Rd. in Southeast Fresno.

The stop is part of a five-city tour this week to announce the pilot launch of the CalSavers program, which is available to private contractors and employees of companies that do not offer an employer-sponsored retirement plan.

There is no expense to employers to make the plan available to workers, though there are monetary penalties if an employer who doesn’t offer a plan fails to register with CalSavers.
