The Fresno Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a dedication ceremony to commemorate State Route 41 being named the Joe Levy Memorial Highway in honor of the late founder and CEO of Gottshalks department stores.

The ceremony will take place on Friday at 9 a.m. at Pardini’s, located at 2257 W. Shaw Ave. in Fresno.

Levy, who passed away in 2014, was a Valley icon and former chairman of the California Transportation Commission. He played a key role in getting a number of highways built in the Fresno area, including State Highway Routes 41, 168 and 180.

California Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 45, passed in April 2015, designates that State Highway Route 41 from Bullard Avenue to Herndon Avenue in Fresno County will be renamed the Joe Levy Memorial Highway.

“Joe Levy was an instrumental and positive force in the Fresno community, in so many ways,” said retired Fresno County Superior Court Judge Robert Oliver. “The naming of this highway, in his honor and memory, is emblematic of his work on the California Transportation Commission, but more fittingly is an ongoing and visible tribute to the many ways in which he contributed to a better Fresno and the surrounding area.”

Those interested in attending the ceremony can contact Angela Vasquez at the Fresno Chamber of Commerce at (559) 495-4825 or avasquez@fresnochamber.com.
