Central Valley unemployment rates rose slightly in November as the farm harvest winded down, balanced out slightly by holiday hiring, according to the latest data from the state Employment Development Department.

Fresno County’s November unemployment rate was 6.9 percent, up from 6.3 percent in October but below 7.8 percent a year ago.

Farm employment posted the largest monthly drop in Fresno County, shedding 3,900 jobs as the grape harvest subsided. Trade, transportation and utilities gained 1,800 jobs, fueled by holiday hiring.

On the year-over-year basis, leisure and hospitality saw the largest increase at 1,700 jobs, with accommodation and food services accounting for 76 percent of the gain.

Kings County’s unemployment rate for November was 7 percent, up from 6.4 percent in October but below 7.7 percent a year ago.

Farms lost 700 jobs month-over-month, while net nonfarm employment remained unchanged.

On an annual basis, farms added 400 jobs and nonfarm industries added a net 100 jobs.

Madera County’s unemployment rate was 6.2 percent, up from 5.9 percent in October but below 6.9 percent a year ago.

Farms lost 1,200 jobs on a monthly basis, while nonfarm industries lost 100 jobs.

Year over year, farms shed 400 jobs, while nonfarm industries gained 700 jobs.

Tulare County’s unemployment rate for November was 8.6 percent, up from 8.3 percent in October but below 9.3 percent a year ago.

Farms lost 1,500 positions last month, while nonfarm industries gained 1,300, led by 900 new jobs in trade, transportation and utilities.

On the annual basis, farms gained 2,300 positions, while nonfarm industries gained 2,200 jobs.

California’s unemployment rate held steady at 4.1 percent in November, down from 4.5 percent last year.
