Fresno will be the site of a Nov. 13 workshop co-hosted by the Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission on community choice energy.

The workshop is at the Nielsen Center at 3110 W. Nielsen Ave. from 6-8 p.m.

The presentation will be made by the Clean Power Exchange, a nonprofit promoting community choice energy, which is a governmental program that buys and/or generates electrical power on behalf of residents, businesses and governmental entities.

Instead of utilities such as Pacific Gas & Electric Co. providing that energy, instead the community choice organization provides it, using the utility’s infrastructure to deliver it.

Existing community choice programs in California primarily marketing themselves as providing clean-energy to customers.

About ten years ago an organization called the San Joaquin Valley Power Authority pushed an effort to bring community choice to the Central Valley with energy prices lower than the utilities, but the economic downturn scuttled that effort.

Members of that agency included Kings County, cities of Clovis, Corcoran, Dinuba, Fresno, Kerman, Kingsburg, Lemoore, Hanford, Parlier, Reedley, Selma, and Sanger.

Hanford City Manager Darrel Pyle is expected to deliver a presentation about community choice energy at the community workshop.

In May, Hanford partnered with the California Choice Energy Authority for a feasibility study for community choice energy

“Current and new industries coming to the City of Hanford have sizable energy demands. Part of the reason we have decided to consider CCA is to gain an edge in economic development and help businesses prosper in our community,” said Darrel Pyle, City of Hanford City Manager.
