The blaze occurred late Monday at Fresno’s Gap Inc. All employees were reportedly safe, though one firefighter suffered a minor leg injury.
Griselda Martinez, the human resources manager at Gap Inc. in Fresno, said the local facility is hosting a job fair on Sept. 9 in the hopes of finding qualified candidates to fill the new positions.
It is not unusual for Fresno’s Gap to hire this time of year in anticipation of the busy holiday season, however Martinez said these positions, while technically seasonal, are attractive to job seekers because there is a high probability of retention. Under normal circumstances, she said, Gap Inc. makes an effort to transition many of its seasonal employees to part-time positions. This time around, though, many will have the opportunity to move up to full-time positions.
“We are marketing these positions as merchandise handlers but it’s peak season so shifts will be fulltime,” Martinez said. “We do expect an increase in volume because of the incident in Fishkill and these employees will have the opportunity to convert to full-time employees when the season is over.”
The merchandise handler position offers hourly and incentive pay, an employee discount on merchandise at Fresno’s Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic and their outlet stores, and a flexible schedule.
The Sept. 9 job fair will have two interview sessions at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Fresno’s Gap distribution center is located at 3685 Gap Drive.
