Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin has stepped into the national political spotlight, endorsing Ohio Governor John Kasich in his bid to capture the Republican presidential nomination.

Sacramento Bee political writer David Siders tweeted on Friday afternoon that Swearengin had endorsed Kasich, praising the Ohio governor’s “proven, pragmatic and responsible record.”

Mark Standriff, Fresno’s communications director, confirmed the mayor’s endorsement and said she was doing so “not in her official role as mayor.”

Standriff added that “Kasich’s staff and not the mayor’s office” would release any further details involving Swearengin’s potential future role in the Kasich campaign.
