The Fresno City Council has voted unanimously Thursday to sell less than an acre of land downtown to become the site of the city’s next hotel.

In a process that took less than three minutes, the seven council members voted unanimously to approve the $644,688 sale to Metro Hospitality Services, Inc., which plans to develop a 200-room Marriott Hotel.

The purchase encompasses .74 acres at the northeast corner of Inyo and M streets, which butts up against the L-shaped Fresno Convention Center Exhibit Hall.

Laura Gloria, the city’s business manager, said the developers are promising to build a four-star hotel on the site by some time in the fall of 2020.

The hotel would feature four floors and include a swimming pool, spa and fitness center, meeting rooms, lounge and bistro. The second floor would include a landscape terrace and courtyard with social gathering areas, according to the agreement.

She said a performance schedule is included in the sale agreement, so if construction doesn’t start by the agreed-upon date in October of next year, then the agreement could dissolve, and the land could return to the city.

“So that way it makes sure by some time in 2020 we have a developed hotel,” she said.

Metro Hospitality Services is a Fowler-based corporation with Tehal Thandi listed as president, according to the development agreement.

Attempts to contact the business following Thursday’s council vote were unsuccessful.

A web search shows Thandi’s involvement with a number of business enterprises, including trucking, farming as well as operating a Hampton Inn & Suites hotel near Herndon Avenue and Highway 99.
