Operators of the Fresno Athletic Hall of Fame say they’re two thirds of the way to their goal to raise $1.5 million to build a high-tech, interactive museum.

“If you were able to attend the 60th annual Fresno County Athletic Hall of Fame Enshrinement Dinner last week, you heard some exciting news about our Capital Campaign,” in which it was announced commitments of $1 million in donations had been reached, Walt Byrd a past president of the Hall of Fame and fundraising campaign chair, said in a written statement.

For more than six decades, the group has inducted notable Fresno athletes into the Hall or Fame without there being an actual hall or other type of building to honor them.

That could change soon for the group looking to convert a 1,900-square-foot section of the southwest wing of the Save Mart Center into a museum, if the donations rates stay on track.

Plans call for an interactive museum, using interactive computer software and touch-screen digital devices to allow visitors far more access to the lives, words and photos and videos of the athletes than they would at standard museums.

Beyond statistics and information on sporting events, many of the displays will focus on the character and values of the athletes, along with how they overcame obstacles in their lives.

“We’re certainly making progress, but the toughest leg of our journey lies ahead,” Byrd wrote. “We’re committed toleaving no stone unturnedin our quest to reach our goal of $1.5 million. Feel free to share this exciting news with anyone that you feel might be interested in getting involved.”
