Members of the Tulare Planning Commission could vote Monday on whether to approve a conditional use permit to build a Pilot Flying J truck stop and travel center off Highway 99 on the city’s south end.

If approved, the facility, which would include fuel pumps for cars and large trucks, a large convenience store, at least one restaurant, rental showers and other amenities for commercial and non-commercial drivers, would be built on a vacant lot at the southwest corner of Blackstone Street and the Paige Avenue exit of southbound Highway 99.
The new station would be up against direct competition from a Mobile station and truck stop at the northeast corner and a combination Love’s Travel Stop and McDonald’s restaurant on the southeast corner.

All three are on the west side of the freeway, with the International—Center, where the World Ag Expo is held annually, across the freeway.

Construction of the Flying J is being requested by Pilot Flying J, the Tennessee-based company that operates 795 Pilot and Flying J truck stops and travel centers across the country.

Besides considering the special use permit, the commissioners also will consider whether to approve the environmental impact report on the project.
