A couple of local engineering firms have received statewide recognition for projects ranging from enhancing a South Valley city’s downtown district to “green” pavement that allows stormwater to pass through it into the soil.

Each year the American Council of Engineering Companies of California (ACEC California) unveils its Engineering Excellence awards. In all, 39 firms in California represent a total of 55 projects. There were 19 Honor Awards granted to 18 firms, 26 Merit Awards granted to 20 firms and ten Commendation Awards granted to nine firms.

Fresno-based Provost & Pritchard Consulting Group, which has eight Central California, received ACEC California awards.

The firm, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in business this year, won Merit Awards for its Lerdo Campus Water & Wastewater Improvements in Kern County, completed by the Bakersfield office, and for the Gary R. Serrato Intertie Facility in Fresno County, completed by the Fresno office.

The Fresno office of Provost & Pritchard also received a Commendation Award for its Pervious Pavement Project in downtown Visalia, which involved the installation of pervious concrete to seven city-owned parking lots in the downtown area.

The Visalia office of QK (formerly quad Knopf) also earned a Commendation Award for its work on the Woodlake Multi-Phase Downtown Enhancement Project in Woodlake, which aimed to create “a more pleasing entrance into the business district” that includes decorative sidewalks, street lighting, landscaping and bicycle lanes, according to the firm.

“The heart of civil engineering is to solve complex challenges to help make people’s lives better,” said Brad Diede, executive director of ACEC California, in a statement. “This year, we are recognizing a wide range of innovative projects that include improving transportation and roadways, giving students a high-quality school campus, and providing better access to clean water. I’m very proud of our engineering and land surveying firms and both their local agency and private sector partners, who keep pushing the envelope to find smarter, more advanced ways to serve the people of California.”
