Don Cameron, the pioneering general manager of Terranova Ranch in western Fresno County, has been named the 2017 Agriculturalist of the Year by the Fresno Chamber of Commerce.
The award recognizes an individual who exemplifies leadership and integrity in the Central Valley agribusiness community, according to a chamber news release.
Cameron is known for employing a number of sustainable farming practices on his 5,000-acre ranch near the community of Helm, including growing organic crops, flooding parts of his ranch in order to recharge underground aquifers, generating two megawatts of energy from on-farm solar installations, preserving conditions for wildlife and utilizing the cleanest diesel engines as well as electric motors.
Cameron will be honored at the annual Ag Awards luncheon Nov. 1 at the Clovis Veterans Memorial District.
“The Chamber is honored to recognize Don Cameron for over four decades of service to the ag industry,” said Nathan Ahle, president and CEO of the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, in a statement. “Having represented our community by testifying before Congress, serving as a board member and chairman of countless ag groups, and being a leader in ag technology in our area, Mr. Cameron is a more than worthy addition to the long list of accomplished Agriculturalists of the Year.”
Past winners include Manuel Cunha, Joe Del Bosque, John Harris, Phil Larson and Debbie Jacobsen.
In addition to the agriculturalist of the year, Bee Sweet Citrus is the winner of the 2017 Baker Peterson Franklin Ag Business Award.
