Health officials in Fresno, Madera and Merced counties are actively monitoring approximately 140 agricultural workers who recently relocated from Arizona after being exposed to measles during an outbreak in that state, according to a joint announcement from the counties and the California Department of Public Health.

Officials said no measles cases have been identified among the workers since their arrival in California.

However, additional agricultural workers who may have been exposed are expected to arrive in the Central Valley in the coming days.

State and local health departments said they have coordinated preparedness efforts to prevent any potential spread of measles should an individual become ill.

Officials emphasized that the risk to the general public remains low and said they will continue monitoring the situation while maintaining statewide readiness.

The monitoring effort highlights the coordination required between public health agencies when seasonal agricultural workers move across state lines. Officials said they are working closely to identify any signs of illness early and respond quickly if necessary.

Health officials emphasized that vaccination remains the best protection against measles. According to the California Department of Public Health, two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine provide 97% protection against the disease. Residents are encouraged to confirm they are up to date on recommended vaccinations and contact their health care provider with questions about their vaccination status.

Officials also advised anyone who develops symptoms consistent with measles—including fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash—to contact a health care provider before seeking medical care so appropriate precautions can be taken to reduce additional exposures.

State and local health officials said they will continue monitoring transferred workers and provide additional guidance if conditions change.
