Valley Children’s Hospital announced Thursday a contribution of $250,000 from some well-known boosters to support the Guilds Center for Community Health in spreading resources and good health to children and families in the Central Valley.

The donation comes from two of the hospital’s biggest and most well-known contributors: the Carr brothers. Both David and Derek Carr have promoted and supported the hospital for over a decade. In 2013, Derek’s son, Dallas, received emergency life-saving treatment at Valley Children’s Hospital.

“The Central Valley is home for Derek and me, and we want to make sure that this region continues to offer every child with opportunities for a bright future,” said David Carr, NFL Network Analyst and former NFL player.

Through discussions with Valley Children’s CEO Todd Suntrapak, David said they were inspired by the work of the Guilds. The Guilds Center for Community Health dedicates itself to improving health through social elements including physical environment, health behaviors and economic status.

Valley Children’s Guilds have been a vital part of the success of Valley Children’s Hospital since 1949. Fundraising efforts led directly to the construction of the hospital in 1952.

The Guilds function by generating both financial and community support to help serve the 1.3 million children in the hospital’s service area and have raised more than $35 million.

According to the hospital, only 20% of the factors involved in overall health are attributed to clinical care, with the remaining 80% related to social determinants.

“We are immensely grateful to David and Derek for their generous donation to the Guilds of Valley Children’s, who, like them, are a special part of our network,” said Suntrapak. “David and Derek’s support of the Guilds and the Guilds Center for Community Health will further strengthen our ability to bridge the gap between clinical care and community health for children and families across the Central Valley.

The Carr’s donation pushes the Guilds Community Health Endowment past its $5 million goal, according to Marla McClaskey, chair of the Guilds Coordinating Council.

“The Carr brothers have always been gracious with their time and resources, and we are thankful for them,” McClaskey said in a news release Thursday.
