George Lurie’s scoop on the foreclosure and sale of Sierra Vista Mall earned a second place showing in a national journalism contest for business publications.

The Alliance of Area Business Publishers’ (AABP) 2016 Editorial Excellence award winners were announced Saturday during the group’s annual summer conference in Des Moines, Iowa. Lurie’s January 2015 story — the first among local media outlets to report the Clovis mall’s foreclosure — took a Silver award in the category of Best Scoop among small tabloid publications.

The Des Moines Business Record earned the Gold award in the category.

The 24 judges for the contest are comprised of faculty members from the University of Missouri School of Journalism, with qualifications in their respective area of expertise. “The purpose of the Alliance competition,” according to AABP Executive Director C. James Dowden, “is to encourage a high level of journalistic performance and service to communities by recognizing editorial excellence and outstanding visual presentation in regional business publications.”
