Donald Trump is the man with likely Republican primary voters in California, according to a new survey conducted by The Public Policy Institute of California.

The survey found that 38 percent of GOP primary voters support the real estate mogul/reality TV star, while Ted Cruz trails with 19 percent and John Kasich and Marco Rubio each have a 12-percent share. The survey ended March 15, the same night Rubio left the race after losing his home state of Florida.

Trump’s lead spans across age, education, gender and income groups.

In the Democratic race, Hillary Clinton has 48 percent support followed by 41 percent for Bernie Sanders. Clinton claims the 45-and-older vote with 63 percent, while most younger voters support Sanders by 63 percent.

In a race closer to home, the survey found that a third of likely electors are undecided on the race to replace Sen. Barbara Boxer. Among all likely voters, Democratic state attorney general Kamala Harris has 26 percent support, followed by Democratic Rep. Loretta Sanchez with 17 percent.

When it comes to business issues, the poll found that 57 percent of likely voters believe that government regulation of business is necessary to protect the public interest, compared to 40 percent that say government regulation of business does more harm than good.

On the Proposition 30 tax on high earnings approved by electors in 2012, 58 percent of likely voters are in favor of extending the tax on earnings of more than $250,000 to fund education and health care.

On the question on whether the U.S. is going in the right direction, an average of 40 percent of Californians believe it is. For the Central Valley, that number drops to 36 percent.

That means 56 percent of all adults think the country is going in the wrong direction.
