Golden State voters are feeling optimistic about the economy, but the cost of living is still a cause for concern, according to a poll by the California Chamber of Commerce.

Nearly two-thirds of voters say more jobs have been created where they live, up from 43 percent in 2015. Voters also said these jobs have lead to higher pay, boosting the middle class.

Optimism for the job market was tempered by three-quarters of voters agreeing that “earning enough income to enjoy a middle class lifestyle is becoming almost impossible in my part of California.”

Parents with children living at home were among the most anxious Californians, with 60 percent agreeing that “my children will have a better future if they leave California” for the fourth year in a row.

On the Proposition 13 front, 80 percent of voters had a favorable view of the measure that limits property tax increases. A majority said they would oppose a split-roll tax initiative that could strip protections for commercial property owners.

A majority also seek a resolution to the recent California Supreme Court decision that classifies independent contractors, agreeing that “workers should be allowed to have the choice to be an independent contractor if a worker wants more flexibility to set their own schedules, earn more income, and for their chosen quality of life.”
