The Bank of America branch in Fresno’s Tower District will be closing effective Nov. 28, according to a letter sent to customers.

“We know you bank with us here at this location and we’re sorry for the inconvenience this closing causes,” according to the letter.

No reason for the closure of the branch at 1264 N. Wishon Ave. was given in the letter, which also recommends Bank of America customers do their banking with a branch at Shields and West avenues or the downtown branch near Fresno and O streets. Each is just shy of three miles away from the Tower branch.

A manager reached at the Tower branch this morning declined to comment on the matter, and referred a reporter to a customer service representative in New York. A message left for Mark Riley, Bank of America’s Central Valley market president based in Fresno, was not returned.

A longtime Bank of America customer believed the branch had been located there since the early 1990s. Just recently, the three ATMs located outside the branch were upgraded with new shade coverings.

Located just west of Tower District watering holes Livingstone’s and Strummers, the Bank of America ATMs have been a popular starting place for people out for a night on the town to first get some cash. But commenters on Facebook, where the news was first shared, remarked there were quite frequently few tellers working inside the branch.

Bank of America is among several large, national banks that have been closing branches in recent years. ABC News quoted a Bank of America spokesperson as saying that up to 10 percent of its 6,100 US branches could possibly be on the chopping block.

A Google news search reveals reports of dozens of Bank of America branches closing around the county in November, including four in Northern California.
