Construction activity may not be soaring in the Central Valley, but you wouldn’t know it by taking a look at several college and high school campuses throughout the region.
With a number of bond measures approved by voters in the last few years, Valley school districts have been infused with new cash to move forward on a few long overdue and novel projects for students to enjoy when classes start up again in the fall.

US Cold Storage embarking on $1.5M expansion

Rod Noll, Western region manager for Florida-based United States Cold Storage, said the company recently decided to expand its Fresno facility.
The $1.5 million, 127,000 square-foot addition will have approximately 4.5 million cubic feet of refrigerated storage space, 20,000 racked pallet positions and an additional 80 blast freezer positions.

Fresno State partners with UC Merced SBDC

UC Merced’s Small Business Development Center has a new partner in Fresno State to deliver its entrepreneur education and consulting services.

For the last three years, the UC Merced Regional Network has been a partner with the Central Valley Business Incubator (CVBI) to support small businesses throughout Fresno, Tulare, Kings and Madera counties with counselors, workshops and financing opportunities to help them grow.

Local banks see negative growth in Q1

Reluctance to borrow — by both businesses and individuals — despite an improving economy, coupled with low interest rates, produced disappointing first quarter earnings for some local community banks and tough questions for some of the struggling banks.

According to Barclay’s compilation of Federal Reserve data, smaller banks’ total loans fell by 0.2 percent nationally. 

Local biz site launches in Fresno market

Kevin Peck learned long ago how hard it is to advertise as a small business owner and still earn a decent living.

Now, the former motorcycle shop owner from Roseville and his business partner Luke Paquin are hoping to help others meet that struggle with a new online business directory that aims to stand apart.

Since dreaming up the idea last year, Peck was hitting up small, locally owned businesses in earnest to sign on with WeBeLocals.com before its official launch on May 1.

Fresno Chamber, Business Journal unveil partnership

The Greater Fresno Area Chamber of Commerce and The Business Journal have entered a new partnership, the results of which are inserted inside this week’s issue.

On the first Friday of every month, the print edition of The Business Journal will feature Chamber Connect, the Chamber’s newsletter. The publication will reach the 1,400 members of the Chamber, and also expose The Business Journal’s readership to the Chamber and its goings on.
